American battleship design Colorado-class dated 20 March 1916

Sent by the Bureau of Construction and Repair to the Navy Department on 28 March 1916. It was a preliminary design to be used as a baseline for 6 designs for the battleships to be built under the Fiscal Year 1917 (the Colorado-class).(1) This design was used for the USS Tennessee (BB-43) and California (BB-44) built under the Fiscal Year 1916. The increased draught of the Tennessee and California was a result of increasing the oil fuel bunker capacity causing am increased range from 8.000 to 10.000 miles. Dimensions 600 (waterline) x 97.5 (waterline) x 30.6 feet and normal displacement 32.600 tons. Speed 21 knots. Range 10.000 nautical miles with a speed of 10 knots. Electric drive machinery. Horsepower 16.800 ehp at 21 knots. Number of boiler room 8. Armament 4x3-35,6cm14” 50 cal guns, 22-12,7cm/5” 51 cal quick firing guns, 4 high power and 4 light anti aircraft guns (Tennessee and California had 4-7,6cm/”guns) and 4-53,3cm/21 submerged torpedo tubes. None torpedo nets. Armour belt main side: (extreme width) 17’0”, (depth below waterline)-9’0” and (thickness) 13½”, 13½”-8”. Barbettes (heavy part)- (light part) 13”. Gun turrets (port)- (sides)- (top)- ( rear) 18”-10”/9”-5”-9”. Conning tower thickness (proper)- (top) 16”-8”. Fire control tower thickness 16”. Conning tower tube thickness (heavy part)- (light part) 16”-6”. Uptake protection thickness 9”-13½”. Protective deck total thickness 140. Splinter deck total thickness 60. Normal displacement consists of: Hull complete and hull fittings 16.220 tons; Protection 8.383 tons; Steam engineering 1.805 tons; Reserve feed and 2/3 supply 180 tons; Battery 1.887 tons; Ammunition and 2/3 ordnance stores 1.423 tons; Equipment and 2/3 equipment stores 465 tons; Outfit and 2/3 stores 625 tons; Oil fuel, 2/3 supply 1.581tons and Margin 31 tons

1.Consisting of the Colorado (BB-45) 1919-1959, Maryland (BB-46) 1917-1959, Washington (BB-47) never completed and West Virginia (BB-48) 1920-1959, preceded by the Tennessee-class and succeeded by the planned South Dakota-class and the actual built North Carolina-class.
