British frigate HMS Montrose F236) 1989-

Heading down the Forth for her last visit at Montrose; she is to be decommissioned at Plymouth

United Kingdom-flagged, homeport HMNB Portsmouth, IMO 8949642, MMSI 234618000 and call sign GCOD. Part of Type 23 or Duke-class frigates, preceded by Type 22 class-frigates and succeeded by Types 26, 31 en 32 classes frigates. Building ordered by Yarrow Shipbuilders in July 1988, laid down on 1 November 1989, launched on 31 July 1992, commissioned on 2 June 1994, refitted Lifex between 2041-2017. Displacement 4,900 tons and as dimensions 133 x 16.1 x 28.6 (height) x 7.3 metres or 436.4 x 52.10 x 93.10 x 23.11 feet. Propulsion consists of 4-2,020shp/1,510kW Paxman Valenta 12CM diesel generators, 2-GEC electric motors with 2,980 kW/4,000 shp horsepower and 2 Rols-Royce Spey SM1C engines with 23,190 kW/31,100 shp horsepower. Minimum speed 28 knots and range of 7,500 nautical miles/15 knots. Armament consists of 1x32 cell GWS 35 Vertical Launching System (VLS) for 21 Sea Ceptor anti-air missiles, 2x4 Harpoon anti-ship missile launchers, 2x2-32.4cm/12,75” Sting Ray anti-submarine torpedo tubes, 1-11.3cm/4.5” BAE Mk 8 naval gun, 2-3cm, 2 miniguns, 4 general purpose machine guns and 1 helicopter for anti-submarine warfare for which she is fitted out with an enclosed hangar and a flight deck. Crew numbers 185 men although there is accommodation avaible for maximum 205 men.
