An item referred to an American news summary reporting a major action 30 miles south of Benghazi and offical reports confirmed on 25 January the arrival of additional Axis merchant ships at Tripoli, Libya. The J.I.C. however believed not that Rommel received considerable einforcement.(1)

Johannes Erwin Eugen Rommel (15 November 1891 Heidenheim an der Brenz-14 October 1944 Herllingen), nicknamed The Desert Fox, commanded since 6 Feburary 1941 the Deutsches Afrika Korps, sent to Libya to support the Italian troops against the British Commonwealth forces. On 21 January he launched a counterattack forcing the Allies back loosing on 29 January Benghazi.
