American schooner rigged steam gunboat CSS Governor Moore (1854) 1862

Drawing Ron van Maanen

Originally build at New York in 1854 as the Charles Morgan for the Southern S.S. Company seized by the Confederates in mid January 1862 at New Orleans and fitted out as the gunboat CSS Governor Moore. She saw active service during the battle of 24 April 1862 when the Northern fleet was underway towards New Orleans and when she exploded caused by heavy gunfire of the enemy. She is also described as a so-called cotton-clad probably referring to the pine lumber and cotton-bales used as protection for her boilers. Her displacement was 1,125 tons, her crew numbered 93 men while she warmed with two rifled 32pdr guns.
