Peruvian (1865-1879) and Chilean (1879-) ironclad Huascar


Her building by the Peruvian government was ordered on 4 August 1864, launched at the shipyard of Laird, Birkenhead, England on 7 October 1865, commissioned on 8 November 1866, captured by Chile during the battle of Angamos on 8 October 1879, decommissioned of active service 1897, decommissioned again in 1934 and nowadays still existing. Displacement 1.180 long tons or 1.199 tons and as dimensions 219’x 35.8’x 18.7’ or 66,9 x 10,9 x 5,7 metres. Brigantine rigged. Her crew numbered 170 men. Speed 12 knots. The armament consisted of 2x1-10”/25,4cm 300 lb Armstrong guns, 2-4.75”/12cm Armstrong guns, 1-12lb gun,1-44cal gatling and she was fitted out with a ram bow. The armour consisted of an iron made belt 2.5” (bow/stern)-4.5” (amidships) or 6,4-11cm thick with the turrets protected by 5.5”/14cm thick armour.
