British 2nd class HMS cruiser Astraea 1890-1920

Of the Astraea-class which was ordered in 1889, laid down in August 1890 at the Devonport Dockyard, launched 17 March 1893, commissioned in November 1895, decommissioned/paid off in July 1919 and finally sold 1 July 1920 to be broken up at Castle, however she was resold and finally broken up in Germany.



With a displacement of 4,360 tons were her dimensions 320 x 49.5 x 21’6”. Her triple expansion engines supplied 7,500 ihp allowing a normal maximum speed of 18 knots and while forced 19,5 knots. Her crew numbered 318 men. The armament consisted of 2-6” quick firing guns, 8-4.7” quick firing guns,1-12pdr, 2-6pdrs, 1-3pdr, 4 machineguns and 3x18” torpedo tubes. The armour consisted of a 3” conning tower, 2” deck and ½”engine hatches.
