The French naval shipbuilding programme according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad evening edition dated 26 November 1909

According to a news item published that day informed the French minister of Marine representatives of the naval harbours that he wanted to propose the parliament to built at Brest and Lorient two battleships of 23,000 tons and to allow for the budget year 1910 5.000.000 francs. These ships were the first of a series which he intended to ask the parliament in his programme which was to be discussed in next January. These new battleships had at least to be able to stand against all known battleships of even be better with the most heavy armament and defence equipment as possible as a result of the experiments with the Jena. To start with 1910 were every year two battleships to be lay down with as result that in 1915 the French navy would posses 19 battleships of which 12 of the dreadnought type (6-Danton class and 6 to be built in 1910-1912), 6 of the Patrie type and finally the Suffren. If the programme was accepted by the parliament it resulted in a considerable decrease of the naval budget while the costs of each ship included ammunition was estimated on around 74.000.000 francs.
