Japanese aircraft carrier Hosyo 1919-1947


Keel laid down at the Asano Co. Yard at Turumi 16 December 1919, launched 13 November 1921, commissioned 27 December 1922, 28 July due to American air attacks at the Kure Navy Base damaged and scrapped 30 April 1947. Her planned sister ship Shokaku was never built.

Displacement 7.470 tons standard and 10.000 tons full load and as dimensions 551’6”x 59’0”x 20’4”. The 2 geared turbines and 8 Kanpon oil-fired boilers provided 30.000 shp allowing a speed of 25 knots. Armed in 1940 with 4-140mm guns, 4x2 25mm anti aircraft guns and 6x2 13mm anti aircraft guns . Maximum 26 aircraft with all needed equipment, normal number was 20. Her three funnels could be lowered to a horizontal position providing a free flight deck.
