Prussian ironclad ram Prinz Adalbertt (1863) 1864-1878



Her building was ordered on 16 July 1863. Laid down as the Cheops in 1863 for account of the Confederate States of America at the French shipyard Arman Brothers at Bordeaux, France just like her sister ship Stonewall Jackson.(1) Launched in June 1864, acquired by the Prussian navy on 25 May delivered on 10 July 1865. Later she proved to be a worse bargain with rotting timbers within short time and worse seagoing qualities. She was in Prussian navy nicknamed Der Lahme (=Lame). On 23 October 1871 decommissioned and part of the reserve caused by woodrot, disarmed in around 1875, stricken on 28 May 1878 at the same year up at Wilhelmshaven. With a displacement of 1.535 tons were her dimensions 50,48 (waterline)-56,9 (over all) x 9,92 x 5,02 metres or 165’7” x 186’8” x 32’6” x 16’6”. The 2-shaft horizontal single expansion delivered 1.200 ihp allowing a speed of 9,5 knots. Original brig rigged, since 1869 schooner. Her armament consisted original of 3-36pdr muzzle loading guns, in Prussian service replaced by 1-21cm gun and 2-17cm guns, all manufactured by Krupp. Her amour made of wrought iron consisted of a 5” thick belt while the tower was protected by 4,5” thick armour.
