USS submarine Pickerel (SS-524) 1944-1972 and Italian Primo Longobardo (S-501( 1972-1980/1981


This Tench-class diesel-electric submarine was laid down at the Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, Kittery, Maine 8 February 1944, launched 15 December 1944 and completed as a Guppy II commissioned 4 April 1949. She was decommissioned from the USS navy 18 August 1972, stricken 5 December 1977 and transferred to Italy, 18 August 1972 where she was renamed Primo Longobardo (S-501). Her final fate is somehow not clear, she was stricken either 31 January 1980 or 31 May 1981. With a displacement of 1,870 tons surfaced and 2,440 tons (2,480 t) submerged and as dimensions 307'0" feet or 94 m x 27'4" or 8.33 m x 17'0"or 5,2m. Speed was surfaced 18.0 knots maximum or while cruising 13.5 knots and submerged a top spped during 30 minutes of 16.0 knots, 9.0 knots while snorkeling or 3.5 knots while cruising. Her crew numbered in American naval service 9-10 officers, 5 petty officers and 70 sailors.
