The Dutch battle cruisers according to the Vlissingse Courant dated 19 September 1939


As lately was reported was the description of the naval shipbuilding program and organisation completed and handed over to the minister of defence. The newspaper Telegraaf which referred to very well informed sources said the commission for maritime defence of the Dutch East Indies reported that battle cruisers were a need. She advices to built such large armoured warships with a tonnage of 25,000-30,000 tons and armed with at least 28cm guns. The possession of such warships urged also modernizing the naval base at Soerabaja.

Note
1.The Dutch 1047-project consisted of the building of 3 battle cruisers of 27,988 tonnes with a main armament of 3x3-28,3cm guns and a speed of around 34 knots. These ships were never realized.
