Dutch rammonitor 2nd class Zr.Ms. Haai 1970-1906


Iron-built, on stocks at Nederlandse Stoomboot Maatschappij at Rotterdam 1 May 1870, launched 20 May 1871, dimensions 59.76/59.56 (over all) x 13.40 x 2.715-2.90m, displacement 1566 ton, 672 ihp, 7.75-8 knots, 2 screw and with a crew which numbered 113-134 men. Bunker capacity 75 ton coal. Armoured belt 114-140mm, gun turret 203-280mm, command turret 140mm and deck 19-25mm. Costs while first being fitted out fl. 763.500. Trial on the Haringvliet 14 August 1873. Commissioned 12 September 1872. Destined for inland service, mainly to defend the sea gates. was armed with 2-23cm guns, which were replaced in 1889 by 1-28cm, 1-7.5cm and 4-3.7cm guns. Efforts to use her in the beginning of 1880 to break the ice in the river below Dordrecht were not successful, she was damaged! Stricken 1905 and 11 July 1906 sold at Hellevoetsluis to be broken up.

According to the journals of the naval yard at Hellevoetsluis she was year after year docked in the period 1872-1879, some times for some days, sometimes for weeks.
