An Egyptian ship of the line burnt at Alexandria in May 1838

In the local Dutch newspaper Vlissingse Courant dated 21 June 1838 was a message of the captain of an Austrian steam boat published. He wrote that 21 May in the morning 02.00 at the shipyard at Alexandria a large ship of the line was burnt, at that moment preparing for a departure towards sea.

In another Dutch newspaper Zierikzeesche Courant dated 29 June 1838 information coming out of tidings from Alexandria dated 26 May was published. The loss of the Egyptian ship of the line lying off Alexandria was deliberately caused. According to the rumours a Turkish minister was suspected. Despite severe research still nothing could said about the causes.

Niles’ Weekly register, volume 54, p. 373, dated 11 August 1838 and the New Yorker, p. 332, dated 11 August 1838 both said: “A large Egyptian ship of war had been destroyed at Alexandria’.
