Great lakes vessel Kaye E. Barker in 2009 appearance


She was originally build for the Cleveland Cliffs Steamship Company as the Edward B. Greene in 1951 in the dry-dock at the yard of the American Shipbuilding Company in Toledo, Ohio. Baptized on 10 January 1952 started her trials at sea on 18 June of the same year. She was part of the AAA-Korea class boats to transport ore and coals and completely built in the dry-dock. Her dimensions were then 647’ x 70’ with a mid-summer capacity of 20,150 tons of ore. The 2 cylinder steam turbine engine supplied 7,700 hp. In the winter of 1975-1976 was she lengthened with 120’ at the Fraser Ship yard of Superior at Wisconsin resulting in a capacity of 26,750 tons.

Five years later was she in the winter rebuild as a self-unloaded fitted out with a 250’ aft fitted boom and a now a capacity slightly decreased to 25,900 tons. Sold to the Rouge Steel Corporation was she renamed Benson Ford (III) became she in 1989 property of the Interlake Steamship Company and renamed on 2 August a year later Kaye E. Barker and used to transport ore, stone and coal. Nowadays are her dimensions 767’00” x 70’0” x 36’0” (depth).
