Russian protected cruiser Schemtschug or Zhemchug (1901-1914)
Of the Isumrud-class. a improved German built Nowik/Novik-design. Her sister ship was the Isumrud or Izumrud. Laid down at the Newski Yard at St. Petersburg 19 January 1901, launched 14 August 1903, commissioned 1 January 1904, completed 26 July 1904 (according to one source) and destroyed in the morning of 28 October 1914 while lying in the harbour of Penang, Malaysia by surprise attacked by the German cruiser Emden. She broke in two parts when the ammunition chamber exploded taking with 89 men.
With a displacement of 3,103 tons standard and 3,530 tons maximum were the dimensions 110,95-111,30 (over all) x 12,2 x 4,90 meter. Her crew numbered 354 men. The three triple expansion engines and 16 coal fired boilers supplied 17,000 hp driving 3 screws allowing a speed of 24,5 knots. The coal capacity was 510 tons (another source claimed 1,310 tons), allowing a range of 3,790 nautical miles. Her armament consisted of 8-12cm guns, 4-47mm quick firing guns, 6-7,72mm machine guns, 3-45,7cm torpedo tubes and 1-63,5 field gun.
