South Korean icebreaker KRS1-special purpose ship RV Araon 2008-

This icebreaker operated by the South Korean government institution Korea Polar Research Institute with designing starting in 2003 was laid down in May 2008 at the Yeongo shipyard of the Hanjin Heavy Industries at Busan, launched on 11 June 2009 and in September of the same year commissioned. Her building costs were 108 billion won. Homeport is Incheon, South Korea. Designed to operate in weather conditions with a highest temperature of 50 degrees above and 30 degrees below zero. IMO no. 9490935, MMSI No. 441619000 and call sign DSQL7.

With a gross tonnage of 7,847 tons and a summer deadweight of 2,970 tons are her dimensions 109,5 c 19,0 x 9,9 metres. Her Diesel electric engines, 2 azimuth thrusters and the 2 bow thrusters supplying 2x5MVV allowing a speed of 12 knots while she had a range of 20,000 nautical miles/70 days. Her crew numbers 85 men consisting of 25 crewmembers and maximum 60 scientific men. Her transport capacity is 31 TEU on deck and another 15 TEU in the cargo hold. She was equipped with a helicopter and a 10meter large barge for research purposes.
