Costs of the British convict hulk establishment in 1848-1849

For years was in the Netherlands a magazine published dealing with maritime affairs. It contained notes dealing with the Royal Dutch Navy and the Dutch merchant shipping/trade, but also supplied information dealing with foreign navies, especially of France and Great Britain. Occasionally we can find information dealing with the navies of other countries like Russia, United States or even Mexico. According to the yearly report of the administration of this establishment over the years 1848 and 1849 published in May that there five hulks, fitted out house 1750 prisoners, which worked on behalf of the government. The prisoners were divided as follows: hulk York (1) in the harbour of Portsmouth 450, Stirling Castle (2) in de harbour of Portsmouth 450, Warrior (3) at the yard of Woolwich 400, Hebe (4) en Wye (5) at the Arsenal of Woolwich 400. Daily were average 1750 prisoners on board, a number which was to small to carry out all ‘prisoner-work’  at the yard and the arsenal! Total expenses for 1848 of the complete establishment £ 38.795:10:11 (in Dutch guilders fl. 465.546,55). Average number of prisoners on board in 1849 was 1657 with a estimated value of £ 17.891 (Dutch guilders fl. 214.692) of their work.
