The Austrian newspaper Beobachter published at Vienna 14 November gave more news dealing with the movements of the Turkish fleet in the Gulf of Lepante. Tidings from Zante dated 11 October mentioned that a Turkish division consisting of small Algerian vessels, joined by a Turkish frigate and galliot with 1.500 soldiers on board, departed from Patras towards Galaxidi. The latter town was destroyed while being the main base for the Grecian pirates, partly destroying the Grecian fleet in the harbour and taking another part towards Patras. After some fights the Grecians retreated in the mountains. Between 5 and 6 October left the main part of the Turkish fleet the Gulf of Lepante, just like the ships at Patras, sailing southwards. Their destination was unknown; according to some rumours to attack the Grecian fleet at Hydra and Specia, according to others to protect the soldiers which were to embark at the Asian coast destined for Morea.
Frankfurt, 21 November. The German Augsburger Algemeine Zeiting dated 17 November published a news item coming from Venice dated 8 November. According to letters from Zante dated 15 October, there was 12 October a severe battle between the Turkish and Grecian fleets around 10-12 miles south of the island. Gunfire was clearly heard, both sides must have lost ships. The Greeks succeeded to cut off a brigantine from the rest of the Turkish fleet which was beached by her own crew not far from Cape Kiri. The brigantine was part of the Algerian squadron, part of the Turkish fleet. When the main part of the Turkish fleet arrived fled the Greeks. Their fleet, 25 ships, large and small, were seen when passing the channel of Zante, flowed by the Turkish from some distance. The falling of the night and contrary winds forced the Turkish to put out their anchors on the roads of Zante. The master of an Austrian ship which arrived at the same time at Zante, stated that the Turkish after breaking the Greek line followed a part of the Greek fleet, forcing another part into the Gulf of Arcadia. Although the Greeks captured some Turkish ships, they didn’t win the battle. The Turkish left Zante 14 October going southwards.
