Naval operations of the Dutch East Company in Banda according to the Generale Missive dated 30 November 1729

From this destination were in one year 520018 lb nutmeg and 154882 lb mace received. The Schoteroog made a bad voyage and returned heavily damaged at Banda. Two men were missing since heavy storms and another 2 were killed and 5 wounded by an attack by natives on one of the Krokodileilanden. The ship was repaired as good as possible. The sloop Reuk returned from the Zuidwestereilanden with 50 2/125 pikol wax and 2 78/125 pikol schildpadhoorn (tortoise-shell?) Off Wetar, Kisar, Romang, Leti and Babare were in 4 months time 133, probably Buginese, seen. At Leti deserted 2 sailors. Natives reported that between the South and North corner of Arouw at the East side between the 160-170 vessels from Macassar were lying. These so-called 'lorrendraaiers' (smugglers) pretended not being afraid for neither the sergeant there stationed or the pantjalang of the company. There was some fear that they sought revenge for the capture of one of their vessels a year earlier. Personnel of the company asked for this reason 3 new pantjalangs. The sloop Reuk exchanged while being at Zuidoostereilanden 150 lb 'tortoise-shell', 2262 lb nacre and 400 cans coconut-oil. Steersman Jan van Persijn of the pantjalang Leti became a a pirate. From the wrecked sloep Uitgang were some guns and an anchor returned by a free civilian. Other stores were saved by divers from the orangkaja van Waru, Jeroen, which received 15 rijksdaalders as compensation. This so-called Jeroen appeared later to be a relation of the Papuan pirate of the negorij Gemioe (which belonged to the radja of Tidore) en involved was in the robbery of the sloepen of the civilians Jan Greve and Ephraim Dirks of Banda. At the last moment came the news that the crew of the large rowboat, counting 20 men, had thrown his steersman over board and fled to Timor. The boat was destined for Run.
