Activities of Algerian privateers according to the Dutch newspaper Opregte Groninger Courant dated 18 august 1767

An item dated Copenhagen, Denmark 7 August supplied more details about what was going on in Algeria. On 2 May returned a Danish merchant frigate at Algiers bringing the annual presents for the Dey and further more 500 quintalen gun power from the last power and another 100 quintalen for the Dey as a private gift. The annual presents were accepted the gun powder returned because of the ad quality while the Dey demanded new powder. This was promised by the Danish consul although the later was the condemned gun power given to the government. The frigate brought letters with back her to Denmark according to which Spain signed a treaty with the Emperor of Morocco. The Dey fitted out in the meantime the Algerian navy. Six of the largest chebeqs were lying ready to depart when the order was given while other 4 were all ready cruising. A new warship with a length of 130 feet was laid down. Some cruisers of the Dey captured between 4 April until June 3 Spanish merchant ships, one loaded with figs and a crew of 10 men, one with several stores and a crew of 10 men and a third loaded with a variety of merchandise. The latter was destined from Naples to Catalonia with 41 people on board including passengers consisting of 28 men, 7 women, 3 boys and 3 girls.
