Portuguese ship of the line Vasco da Gama fought successfully with Algerian warships according to the Dutch newspaper Groninger Courant dated 16 August 1803
According to an item dated Lisbon 30 June was the Portuguese 74-gun of the line Vasco da Gama ordered to cruise in the Mediterranean. Off the Algerian coast were 3 Algerian chebecqs each of 30 gun and a 40-gun frigate sighted, the latter belonged in the past to the Portuguese navy. During a battle of 3 hours were 2 chebecqs destroyed and the third one captured. The frigate fled and was pursued until a navigational depth of 5 fathom. On board of the captured chebecq were 200 prisoners freed including 12 Italians and 2 Portuguese.
