American frigate USS Elrod (FFG-55), Dutch Naval Annual Days at Den Helder 11 July 2008

Named after major Henry T. Elrod. Her building at the Bath Iron Works was ordered on 22 May 1981, two years later on 21 November was she laid down, launched in 12 May 1984 and commissioned on 21 September 1985. Homeport is NS Norfolk, Virginia, USA.

Of the Oliver Hazard Perry-class with a full load displacement of 4,100-4,170 tons and as dimensions 138 x 14 x 6,7 metres or 453 x 45 x 22 feet. The two General Electric LM2500-30 gas turbines supplied 41,000 bhp allowing via one shaft a speed of more as 29 knots while with a speed of 18 knots she has a range of 5,000 nautical miles. Her crew numbered 205 men. Armed with 1-7,6cm gun, 2x3-32,4cm torpedo launchers, 1-Mk15 Vulcan Phalanx CIWS, 4-0.50” machine guns and two SH-60B LAMPS III helicopters.
