The end of the navy of Honduras according to the Dutch newspaper Rotterdamsch Nieuwsblad 10 November 1909
An item reported the end of the navy of Honduras consisting of one gunboat which sighted two or three days earlier a suspected ship. This was stopped and visited and seized being a rum smuggler. The crew was rewarded with extra drank rations and became drunk. The smugglers thrown all 18 crewmembers over board, scuttled the gunboat and fled. The newspaper Het nieuws van den dag dated 9 November confirmed this item adding that the smuggler was British flagged and the name of the gunboat Tatumbla.(1)
Note
1. Conway’s All the world’s Fighting Ships 1906-1921 mentioned a gunboat Tatumbla of 200 tons armed with two small guns, a crew of 44 men and a speed of 12 knots. The American newspaper The New York Times dated 26 March 1907 reported her fight with the Nicaraguan gunboats Ometepe and San Jacinto 12 days earlier near Trujillo. She received from the Honduran troop transport Olympia a large Hotchkiss gun with as result that she was now armed with three Hotchkiss guns.
