French and German naval relations according to the Dutch newspaper Vissingse Courant dated 27 July 1901

An item reported that when the German warship Gera coming from China with on board in the Suez Canal a French troop ship met both crews welcomed each other. This was a proof of the good relations between both countries. The French newspaper Echo de Paris was however less enthusiastic by warning against the large German ships which coming from Bremen and Hamburg anchored in the port of Cherbourg. In wartime could France expect an invasion via Cherbourg by German troops transported in the same large boats which were so familiar with the French naval base.
