An item dated New York 24 January reported that the American transport Western Pacific (1) arrived with the 271 passengers of the Powhatan. The edition of a day earlier had published an item dated Halifax dated the 23rd that all passengers were taken over by an American transport after nearly a week powerless wandering over the Atlantic. The Nieuwe Rotterdamsche Courant dated 28 January reported that according to tidings received from New York a day earlier the transport Powhatan which was in ‘half-sinking’ condition now being towed by the Lady Laurier and a cutter of the coast guard with the hope to arrive safely at New York before Tuesday evening.
