British submarine HMS Poseidon 1928-1931


Of the Parthian-class with as sister ships the Parthian, Pandora, Perseus, Phoenix and Proteus. Laid down at the shipyard of Vickers Shipbuilding and Engineering, Barrow-in-Furness on 5 September 1928, launched on 22 August a year later and commissioned on 5 May 1930. On 9 June 1931 sunk she after a collision with the Chinese merchant steamship Yuta north off Weihai causing the life of 21 men. In 1972 she was secretly lifted without British permission by China. With a displacement of 1.499 tons/1.475 long tons (surfaced)-2.070 tons/2.040 long tons (submerged) were her dimensions 79 x 8,5 x 4,17 metres or 260 x 28 x 13 feet. The two diesel engines supplied 4.400 hp allowing a surfaced speed of 17,5 knots and the two electric motors while supplying 1.530 hp allowed a speed of 9 knots. With a speed of 10 knots she had a range of 8.500 nautical miles. The crew numbered 58 men. The armament consisted of 6-21” bow torpedo tubes, 2-21” stern torpedo tubes. 1-4”/10,2cm gun on the deck and 2 machine guns.
