An item reported Hungary started in April negotiations to buy foreign seagoing freighters with a total tonnage of 70.000 tons to solve problems caused by the British blockade. The ships were to be Hungarian flagged and registered at Fiume. The necessary capital was available also thanks to Italian shareholders. Due to the fact that Italy entered in what became as the Second World War decided Hungary to wait with buying ships. This was motivated pointing out that ships of belligerent countries during wartime were not allowed to change flags and secondly buying neutral ships against the present prizes was to expensive when afterwards the peace was restored and it was confronted with too high amortization costs.
