Italian dreadnought battleship Caio Duilio 1913-1957

Of the Andra Doria-class with as sister ship the Andrea Doria which class succeeded the Conti di Cavour-class and was succeeded by the Vittorio Veneto-class in stead of the planned Francesco Caracciolo-class. Laid down at the Castellammare di Stabia shipyard, Naples on 24 February 1912 and on 24 April a year later launched, commissioned on 13 June 1916, April 1937-October 1940 extensively modernized since 1942 out of service due to lacking fuel, since 1943 training ship and broken up in La Spezia in 1957.

Displacement 22.956 normal original/(26.434 (normal modernized)-24.729 (full load original)/29,391 (full load modernized) and as dimensions 168,96 x 28,03 x 8,58 metres or 554’3”x 92’0”x 28’1”. Original fitted out with steam turbines and twenty boilers which supplied 30.000 ship via four shafts allowing a speed of 21 knots. After the modernization supplied the turbines and just 8 Yarrow boilers 75.000 ship via two shafts allowing a speed of 27 knots. Her crew numbered 1,233 (original)-1.485 9after modernisation). The armament consisted original of 3x3+2x2-30,5cm/12” guns, 16x15,2cm/6” guns, 13x7,5/3” guns and 6x7,6cm/3” anti aircraft guns and 3x45,0xm/18” torpedo tubes. After her modernisation in 1937-1940 were of the main guns 3 removed and the resting bored up to 32cm/1’2’6 guns, the 15,2 cm guns were replaced by 4x3-13,5cm/5.3” guns, the 7,6xn guns were replaced by 10x9cm/3.5” anti aircraft guns, 15x3,7cm anti aircraft guns and 16x2cm anti aircraft guns while the torpedo tubes were removed. She was protected by armour consisting of a 25,4cm thick belt, a 9,8cm thick deck while the turrets were protected by 28cm armour.
