British journalist praising quality of German naval corps according to the Dutch newspaper Heldersche Courant dated 15 July 1871

An item referred to the British newspaper Daily News which praised the German corps of navy officers. Further more wrote the journalist that on board of each German warship despite her size drawings of foreign warships were available with their weakest points and the best means to destroy their engines. Accurate maps of ports were also available and each officer was yearly examined to prevent that they could not enter a harbour without the presence of a pilot. The journalist referred to what happened the year before when the French navy could do nothing lacking pilots. A German officer claimed that Lorient was a very difficult port which he would not enter without the help of a pilot if not necessary but each German lieutenant was able to enter Plymouth without needing assistance.
