The French torpedo boat policy according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1933 no. 5

An item referred to the magazine N.&M. Rec. dated 5 July 1933 reported that France since the First World War ordered the building of 20-21 ton torpedo boats with a length of 19 metres. Although the contracted speed was 47 knots achieven the newest boat built at Meulan on the Seine with 2.000 hp even 50 knots. The armament consisted of 2 torpedoes (tubes?) and 1 machinegun. Earlier types built at St. Nazaire acheven with just 1.100 hp 44 knots. The intensive improvement of engines and hull shape resulted in an expectation of a speed even exceeding 50 knots. Until that moment experimented the French Admiralty hardly with this kind of boats. With changed times was an economic shipbuilding policy needed. Especially the younger officers propagated that the French strategic position was an excellent for the use of motor torpedo boats.
