Gunboats for the Batavia-French flotilla built at Middelburg according to the Dutch newspaper Groninger courant dated 16 August 1803

An item dated Flushing the 9th reported that the shipyard of the Asiatic Council at Middelburg [the former Dutch East Indies Company] was taken over by the commissary for the Batavian navy at Flushing to be used for building vessels and gunboats for the navy.(1) All efforts were executed to complete the frigate Aurora and some flat-bottomed vessels still on stocks to be followed by a large number.(2) The newspaper Amsterdamsche courant dated the 16th confirmed this item.

1. Built for the intended French invasion of England. Zeeuws Archief. Handschriftenverzameling no. 358. Supervisor during their building was Johannis de Villairs. a so-called commodore of the ships’ carpenters. Since 23 March 1798 responsible for the affairs of this yard until she was closed in 1805.
