Japanese merchant shipbuilding more expensive as North American according to the Dutch newspaper Algemeen Handelsblad morning edition dated 6 January 1920

The British consul general at Kobe, Japan reported that the building costs for ships in Japan amounted around ƒ 312,50 a ton for freighters and ƒ 375 for tankers. This was an large increase while not far ago the building costs were ƒ 250 a ton. The strongly increased demand caused this high price with as result that in contrary to the past Japanese shipyards hardly could compete with the USA. Shortly after the armistice of the First World War were the costs in the USA for freighters and tankers ƒ 272,50 and ƒ 345 a ton and nowadays even cheaper.
