American squadron commanded by Perry destined towards Japan according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 1 November 1852

USS Vermont

One of the most important newspapers of New York the Herald dated 16 October reported that the expedition towards Japan commanded by rear admiral Perry consisted of the 100-gun Vermont, the 9-gun Susquehanna, the 10-gun Mississippi, 10-gun Princeton, 20-gun Falmouth, 30-gun Macedonian, 20-gun Plymouth and the 20-gun Saratago. Another newspaper reported that according to tidings from Washington the Navy Department seriously watch what was going on and that nearly all available ships were sent as soon as possible to sea. The Japan expedition was to depart in November and rear admiral M'Aulay was ordered to stay with the South Sea squadron on his station until the situation was normal again. At Washington were tidings received that a large amount of American ships which were underway to Lobos to load without permission of the Peruvian government in danger were to be seized.

Note
1. This expedition forced the Japanese government to open her ports for the western world. The only country, which was permitted to trade in Japan although under very strict regulations, was of course the Netherlands with their own artificial island Decima off Nagasaki (1641-1859)!
