The Egyptian and Turkish navies in the Mediterranean according to the Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 31 July 1840

Before Beirut were the 3rd 14 Turkish and Egyptian frigates lying which transported troops to this destination. During the voyage tried on board of some of these ships Turkish sailors to overwhelm the Egyptian officers and sailors to be able to return with the ships to Constantinople. These efforts failed and a large amount of Turkish sailors were or executed or taken as prisoner to Alexandria. While 200 of them escaped and joined the Syrian rebels.
