Former British ship of the line Victor Emanuel converted into hospital ship according to the Dutch newspaper Leeuwarder courant dated 24 October 1873

An item dated London the 20th reported that the ship of the line Victor Emanuel was being fitted out to serve in the expedition against the Ashanti on the Gold Coast, West Africa (1). She was to be used to accommodate sick men.

1. This was screw steam 2nd rate ship of the line of which the building at the Pembroke Dockyard was ordered on 4 April 1851, laid down on 16 May two years later, launched on 27 February 1855 as the Repulse, renamed on 7 December Victor Emanuel and commissioned on 9 September 1858. Since 1873 served as hospital and receiving ship and finally sold in 1899.
2. The Second Ashanti War was in in 1873-1874. The Ashanti were finally beaten in 1896 and their territory became a protectorate under the governor of the British Gold Coast. In 1956 was British Togoland added to the British Gold Coast since 1957 known as Ghana. The Danish Gold Coast and the Dutch Gold Coast were added in 1850 respectively 1871 to the British Gold Coast.
