Dutch freighter annex passenger ship Van Heutsz 1924-

The contract between the shipyard De Schelde at Vlissingen, Netherlands and the Kon. Paketvaart Maatschappij (KPM), Amsterdam, Netherlands was signed on 23 November 1924 although the definitive order was not earlier dated as 22 December. She was to be used for cargo, mail and passengers transport. During the building was the ingenieursbureau voor scheepsbouw M.A. Cornelissen responsible for the supervision. This firm also designed the ship. The firm Allan&Co. designed the 1st class deck saloon and the dinner salon, the shipyard the other designs for the panelling; all was made at the shipyard herself. The needed 2.600 ton steel was ordered in January 1925 with the financial administration starting on 9 March. The keel was laid down on 15 April at the south slip with yard number 180, in the thrushes on 28 November, plated on 9 January 1926 and launched on Saturday 13 March at 14.00 o’clock by Mrs. T. van Waveren-Janszen. Lying berthed were the first trials n 24 September and 1 October and on the 6th left she the shipyard for her technical trials on the 7th and 8th. Between the20st and 22nd was she docked at Rotterdam, Netherlands followed by again technical trials between the 28th and 31st. The official trial was on 8 November and she was delivered to the shipping company to begin her maiden voyage to the Dutch East Indies on the 13th. Since 1 July 1947 owned by the Kon. Java China Paketvaart Lijnen N.V., although in January 1957 returned to the K.P.M. and then renamed Barentsz. In February 1959 sold to Hong Kong to be broken up.

Gross tonnage 4.552 tons, net tonnage 2.678 tons, displacement 2.812 (launching with draught 1,835 fore and 3,05 aft meters)-8.030 (with 20’0” draught)-8.540 (with 21’3” draught) and as dimensions 118,26 (between perpendiculars)-123,44 (over all) x 15,91 x 6,10-636, (full loaded) x 8,38 (depth main deck)-10,74 (depth) metres. Seven watertight bulkheads. Four hatches and cargo holds with a total capacity of 211.469 cubic feet bales or 229.00 cubic feet grain. Her crew numbered 105 men and she passenger accommodation for 16 1st class, 30-2nd class and 2.270 persons between decks. There were 2 hospitals on board. Two screws, speed 13,25 knots. Horsepower supplied by 2-6 cylinder Schelde-Sulzer 2 stroke diesel engines totally delivered 4.660 ahp or 3.409 ehp.
