Crew of Dutch corvette Zr.Ms. Pollux intended to blow up own ship when attacked by the British navy according to the Dutch newspaper Zierikzeesche Courant dated 6 November 1832

An item dated Dordrecht, Netherlands 31 October reported about happened during the homeward bound voyage of the Dutch corvette Zr.Ms. Pollux (1) which anchored on the roads of Vlissingen, Netherlands on the 20th. When she approached the British Channel she met an American ship which warned her for the already outbreak of the hospitalities between England and Netherlands.(2) Her commanding officer Tulleken called all the crewmembers -most of them were ill- on deck, informed them and proposed when they were attacked by a ship of the enemy to approach it as close as possible and to blow up both ships. All men agreed enthusiast.

1. 1. A so-called ‘kuil’corvette, laid down at the navy yard at Rotterdam, Netherlands  September 1822 by P. Glavimans, launched 13 March 1824, stricken and broken up 1838, displacement 900 tons, dimensions 36 x 10 metres and 28 guns.
2. On 25 August 1830 started a revolt in what afterwards become the independent kingdom of Belgium but at that moment since 1815 still part of the kingdom of the Netherlands. On 4 October 1830 declared the Belgians their independence, on 21 July 1831 was their first king installed. Not earlier as in 1839 accepted the Netherlands the consequences (Treaty of London). France and England supported the Belgians in their desire for independence.
