During her meeting on 7 July 1588 the States of Zeeland decided to inform the British queen that the [Spanish] enemy was gathering in huge no.s at Dunkirk, France and Nieuwpoort, Belgium with the intended to invade England. They asked her to sent some ships to strengthen the Dutch fleet lying off Dunkirk with the promise that if the enemy headed for England or Scotland the Dutch would harasses the enemy in any possible ways.
