As a result of a trade agreement in 1948 signed between the Soviet Union and the Netherlands were in the fifties and sixties of the 20th century several merchant ships built for the first country by Dutch shipyards. At Vlissingen, Netherlands started the shipyard Kon.Mij. De Schelde in 1952 with the first range consisting of 3 ships namely the Lena, Yenesei and Ob.

IMO 5205954 and callsign UQSZ. . The keel of the Lena with yard number 274 was laid down on 13 May 1952, launched on 25 July 1953 and baptized by Mrs. T.N. Gourova, representative for trade affairs at Amsterdam, Netherlands and handed over on 4 March 1954. The Lena was used as supply vessel for an Antarctic expedition departing on 15 December 1956 to the Antarctic. Dimensions 118,45 (between perpendiculars)-130,19 (over all) x 18,84 (moulded) x 8,17 (maximum summer) x 11,20 (moulded depth) or 388’7½”-427’1¾” x 61’9½” x 26’9 5/8” x 36’9” and a corresponding deadweight of 7.430 tons of 1.016 kg. Cubic bale capacity 10.137 cubic metres or 358.020 cubic feet. Service speed 14 knots. Accommodation for 72 crew members and 12 passengers
