Austrian armoured frigate 3rd class Salamander 1861-1895


Of the Drache-class with as sister ship the Drache, designed by naval architect-inspector of the Austrian Naval Construction Joseph Ritter von Romako (Atzgersdorf, Niederösterreich 1828. Still wood-hulled. Laid down at the shipyard Stabilimento Tecnico Triestino, Trieste, Italy in February 1861, launched on 22 August 1861, completed in May 1862, refitted 1869-1870, stricken on 18 March 1883, since then mine store ship and finally broken up in 1895. With a displacement of 2.750 tons were her dimensions 62,78 (between perpendiculars) x 13,94 x 6,30 metres or 206’x 45’8” x 20’7”. The two cylinder low pressure engines supplied 1.842 ihp allowing a speed of 11 knots. The armour consisted of a 115 mm thick belt. Her crew numbered 346 men. The original armament consisted of 18-24 pd muzzle loading rifles, 10-48pd muzzle loading to which 1-8pd muzzle loading gun and 1-4pd muzzle loading gun were added to be used as landing guns. In 1867 was her armament changed into 10-7” Armstrong muzzle loading guns and 2-2” bronze muzzle loading rifles.
