Austrian brig of war Triton exploded according to the Dutch newspaper Dagblad van Zuidholland en ‘s-Gravenhage dated 13 May 1859

An item dated Trieste, Italy dated the 11th reported that the Austrian brig of war Triton exploded with as result that 80 persons were killed wounded or missing. Her commanding officer was during the disaster on shore.(1)

The Tritone, oak-built, laid down at Venice, Italy in 1834, launched on 30 April 1836, as the San Marco in Venetian service 1848-1849, renamed Triton in 1849, sunk due to an ammunition explosion in 1859, a measurement of 391 tons, dimensions 32,0 x 8,8 metres, an armament of 12-21 guns and a crew numbering 100-111 men.
