Russian naval force invaded Seoul, Korea according to the Dutch newspaper Nieuwsblad van het Noorden dated 26 November 1896

An item dated Yokohama, Japan 25th referred to tidings received from Seoul, Korea that some Korean officers were arrested accused of a conspiracy against the king. A Russian naval force invaded the town.(1)

1. The Japanese Empire had important interests in Korea and Manchuria. After a disastrous war were the Chinese interests in Korea in fact eliminated. The Manchurian harbour Port Arthur was of main interest for the Russian merchants and her navy. Russia had also important interests in Korea. Between 1897 and 1910 the Korean Empire managed to stay independent from Japan. The king must be Gojong since 1897 even emperor.
