American screw steam sloop USS Ticonderoga passing Vlissingen, Netherlands towards open sea according to the Dutch newspaper Middelburgsche courant dated 18 July 1868


An item reported the passing of Vlissingen, Netherlands a day earlier by a American warship coming from Antwerp, Belgium. It was believed she was the USS ram Taconderoga.

1, This must be the USS Ticonderoga, s screw steam sloop of the Lackwanna-class, laid down at the New York Navy yard in 1861, launched on 16 October 1862, commissioned on 12 May 1863, finally decommissioned on 10 September 1882 and sold at Boston, USA to Thomas Butler&Company on 5 August 1887. With a displacement of 2.526 long tons/2.567 tons were her dimensions 72 x 11,63 x 5,33 metres or 237 x 38.2 x 17.6 feet. Speed 11 knots. Armament consisting of 1-150 pd Parrott rifle, 1-50pd Dahlgren, 6-23cm/9” Dahlgren smoothbore guns, 2-24pd howitzers, 2-12pd rifles and 2 heavy 12pd smoothbores.
