Dutch screw steam ship 1st class Zr. Ms. Het Metalen Kruis stationed in the waters around Japan according to the Dutch newspaper Nederlandsche Staatscourant dated 30 November 1864
An item dated referred to tidings dated 15 October dealing with the movements of the Dutch squadron in the Dutch East Indies reported that the Dutch screw steam ship 1st class Zr. Ms. Het Metalen Kruis captain J.E. de Man was stationed in the waters around Japan.

Screw steamship 1st class also called frigate, call sign GQNT, wood-built, laid down at the navy yard at Amsterdam on 21 March 1860, launched on 29 July 1862, ex-Soerabaja renamed in 1863, commissioned on 17 September 1863, building costs ƒ 752.588,82, decommissioned and condemned at Surabaya, Dutch East Indies on 20 September 1878, dimensions 58,00 (between perpendiculars) x 12,25 x 5,50 metres, a displacement of 2.030 tons, horsepower 700 hp, speed 8,5 knots, an armament of 16 guns (8 long 30pd, 8 rifled 16cm) and a crew numbering 225 men.
2. She was part of the allied naval force which on 5-6 September 1864 forced the Japanese to reopen Shimonoseki Strait as an open fairway.
