New American battleships and battle cruisers were fitted out with 40,6cm guns according to the Dutch magazine Marineblad dated 1915-1916 no. 6

An item referred to the magazine Moniteur de la Flotte reported that the American rear admiral Strauss (1) chief of the Bureau of Ordnance stated that that it was not impossible that the new ironclads (=battleships) and battle cruisers were to be fitted out with 40,6cm guns. The new 35,6cm gun was in his opinion equal to the foreign 38cm guns.

1. Joseph Strauss (16 November 1861 Mount Morris, New York, USA-30 December 1948), he retired in the rank of admiral on 16 November 1925. Appointed on 21 October 1913 as chief of the Bureau pf Ordinance, but on 30 December 1916 appointed as commanding officer of the USS Nevada. Between 8 October 1937-8 February 1938 part of thr Advisory Board on Battleship Plans.
