American armoured cruiser USS Maine (ACR-1) 1888-

Building ordered on 3 August 1886, laid down at the New York Naval Shipyard, Brooklyn, New York, USA on 17 October 1888, launched on 18 November 1889, sponsored by Alice Tracy Wilmerding, commissioned on 17 September 1895 and finally sunk after an explosion while ling in the harbour of Havana, Cuba on 15 February 1898. The wreck was scuttles in the Strait of Florida on 16 March 1912. Building costs 4.677.788,75. Her loss was of the reasons which caused the war between the USA and Spain(25 April-12 August 1898).

With a displacement of 6.789 tons/6.682 long tons and as dimensions 98,9 (over all) x 16,4 x 6,9 (maximum) metres or 324.4 x 57 x 22.6 feet. The two vertical triple expansion steam engines and 8 boilers supplied via 2 screws 9.293 ihp allowing a speed of 16,45 knots and with a speed of 10 knots a range of 6.670 nautical miles. Her crew numbered 374 men. The armour consisted pf a 30,5cm/12” thick belt, a 5,1-7,6cm/2-3”thick deck, 16,2cm/6” thick bulkheads with the gun turrets and the conning tower protected by respectively 20,3cm/8” and 25,4cm/10”. The armament consisted pf 2x2-25,4cm/10” 30 mark 2 guns, 6-15,2cm/6” /40 guns, 4-1pd/3,7cm/1.5” Hotchkiss guns, 4-1-pd/3,7cm/1.5” Driggs-Schroeder gins, 4-Gatling /45-70 guns and 4-45,7cm/1.8” torpedo tubes.
