German mine cruiser SMS (ex-“mine steamer B”) Albatross 1907-1921
Minelayer cruiser of the Nautilus-class Consisting of the Nautilus and the Albatross. As the ‘mine steamer B” laid down at AG Weser, Bremen, Germany on 24 May 1907, launched on 23 October 1907, commissioned on 19 May 1908, sea trials 19 May-25 July 1908, deliberately stranded on the island of Gotland, Sweden, heavily damaged after a fight with Russian cruisers after lying a minefield of the Aland Islands on 2 July 1915, salvaged and interned the same month by the Swedish, returned to Germany in January 1919, stricken on 21 March 1921, sold for a sum of 900.000 Mark and broken up at Hamburg, Germany.
Displacement 2.506 tons and as dimensions 100,9 (over all) x 11,5 x 4,4 metres or 331.0 x 37.9 x 14.5 feet. The machinery consisted of 2x3 cylinder triple expansion steam engines and 4 water tube boilers supplying 6.600 hp allowing a speed of 20 knots. With a speed of 9 knots was the range 3.530 nautical miles. Crew numbered 208 men (included 11 officers). The armament consisted of 8x1-8,8cm/3.5” L/45 quick firing guns and 288 mines.
