German mine laying cruiser SMS (ex-Neubau Minendampfer ”C”) Brummer 1915-1919
Of the Brummer-class mine laying cruisers consisting of the Brummer and Bremse. Building ordered as the “Neubau Minendampfer C”, laid down at the AG Vulcan shipyard, Stettin with yard number 422 in 1915, launched on 11 December 1915, commissioned on 2 April 1916 and scuttled by her own crew at Scapa Flow, Orkney Isles, Scotland on 21 June 1919. Her remains still lying there.
Gross register tonnage 3.615 tons, net register tonnage 1.632 tons, displacement 4.385 (design)-5.856 (maximum) and as dimensions 135 (waterline)-140,4 (over all) x 13,2 x 5,88-6 x 9 (hold) metres or 461 x 43 x 20 feet. The machinery consisted of 2 sets steam turbines and 4 oil-fuelled Marine-type boilers and 2 coal fuelled Marine-type boilers supplying 3x33.000 (continuous)-42.797 (trial) hp allowing a speed of 28-34 (in service) knots. The crew consisted of 306 men (included 16 officers). The armour consisted of a 4cm/1.6” thick belt, a 1,5cm/0.59” thick deck with the conning tower protected by 10cm/3.9” thick armour. The armament consisted of 4x1-15cm/5.9” L/45 quick firing guns, 2-8,8cm/3.5” L/45 anti aircraft guns, 2-50cm/20” torpedo tubes in a swivel mount situated amidships and 400 mines.
