The French naval shipbuilding program according to the Dutch newspaper De Sumatra Post dated 24 December 1938


The Dunkerque

Richelieu-class

An item dated London, England 19th December referred to the newest Jane’s Fighting Ships which was just published. The news item was especially dealing with the shipbuilding programs of the major naval powers England, France, Italy, Japan added with Russia and Germany but strangely not mentioning the USA. The French program consisted of 4 battleships with as main armament 15” guns(1), 2 aircraft carriers, 3 cruisers, 22 destroyers, 4 torpedo boats and 24 submarines.

1. The Richelieu-class consisting of the Richelieu, Jean Bart, both completed, the Clemenceau laid down but never completed and the Gascogne of which the building even never started, with a design displacement of 35.000 tons and a 2x4-38cm/15” /45 Modèle guns. Preceded by the Dunkerque-class and succeeded by the planned but never realized Alsace-class.
