Part of the Erzherzog Ferdinand Max-class broadside armoured frigates consisting of the Erzherzog Ferdinand Max and Habsburg, preceded by the Kaiser Max-class and succeeded by the Lissa. Laid down by San Marco shipyard/Stabilimento Tecnico Triestino, Trieste, Italy on 6 May 1863, launched on 24 May 1865, commissioned in June 1866, stricken on 19 May 1886, tender to the gunnery training school 1889-1908 and broken up in 1916.

Displacement 3.588-5.140 (source dated 1881)  tons and as dimensions 79,97 (between perpendiculars)-83,75 (over all) x 15,96 (maximum) x 6,32 (fore)-7,82 (aft) x 7,16  (hold) metres or 274’8”x  52’4” x 23’4”. Ratio length: beam 5.11. Submerged surface midship section 85,75 square metres. The machinery consisted of a single expansion steam engine supplying 2.925 ihp allowing with the Griffith screw a speed of 10,3-12,54 knots. Coal consumption with full speed was per hour 1,45 kg/hp resulting in a range of just 700 nautical miles. Barque-rigging later replaced by a 3-mast schooner rigging. Her crew numbered 511 men. The wrought iron armour consisted of 8,7cm/3.4”- 12,3cm/4.8” on 66cm timber thick belt. Armament was first intended to be 32-48pd smoothbore guns. The armament consisted of 16-48 pd muzzle loading guns, 4-8pd guns and 2-3pd guns. After 1874 14-18cm/7” muzzle loading Armstrong guns and 4 smaller guns. Rearmed in 1882 when 4-9cm/3.5” breech loading guns, 2-7cm/2.8” breech loading guns, 2-4,7cm/’.9” quick firing revolver guns and 3-2,5cm/0.98” auto cannons were added. After 1886 remained 8-10cm/3.9” guns until 1887 when those guns were replaced by 1-26cm/10” guns and 1-24cm/9.4” gun. Original height of the battery was 2,2 metres.
